Breetzke wins SA U19 Cricketer of the Year

Matthew Breetzke would like to take his confidence from winning the SA U19 Cricketer of the Year award into his campaign with the Warriors.

The 19-year-old opener had a fantastic season, gaining recognition by scoring 300 runs in five innings against the West Indies. He followed this up with 243 runs in four innings in a tri-series which included England and Namibia.

World Cup selection followed and he racked up another 203 runs in six innings in New Zealand.

His overall statistics were phenomenal – 746 runs at an average of 53, which included four centuries.

Speaking exclusively to SA Cricket magazine, the Warriors player had this to say.

‘This is an awesome award, it’s been a long journey. I think I’ve been with the side for the last 12 to 16 months. So to get this award is really special,’ said Breetzke.

Breetzke struggled to adapt in his opening season at franchise level, but he aims to carry over his confidence of winning a CSA award into the new domestic season.

‘It’s a different kind of pressure playing for professional cricket. For me, it was a lot to do with conditions but I’m looking forward to next season.’
