Terblanche, Beaufort lead Cobras and Warriors to Day 1 triumphs at Cubs Week

While most of the country’s attention was focused on the Castle Lager Test match at PPC Newlands in Cape Town, the nation’s future stars took to the field in the 11th edition of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Franchise Cubs Week in Stellenbosch. Ruan Terblanche and Luke Beaufort recorded centuries to inspire their respective sides to comfortable victories during day one’s action on Thursday.

The World Sports Betting (WSB) Cape Cobras clinched a six-wicket win over the bizhub Highveld Lions, while the Warriors took the honours against the VKB Knights by 49 runs. The Hollywoodbets Dolphins claimed the most convincing win of the day, defeating the Multiply Titans by seven wickets in a low-scoring contest.

The Cape Cobras’ Terblanche was the day’s top scorer as his unbeaten 116 (160 balls, 11x4s, 2x6s) led the home side in their successful chase after Lions won the toss and posted 243/8 after 50 overs.

Despite Cameron Shekleton’s 98 and Jarred Jardine’s 4/45 with the ball for the Johannesburg side, Terblanche formed a crucial 161-run, second-wicket partnership with Bonga Makhakha (66) to help the Cape Cobras secure the result with one over remaining.

Meanwhile, the Warriors’ Beaufort continued his fine form with the bat from the recently concluded Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week.  The middle-order batsman notched up his second hundred (103) in as many matches to lead his side to 224/5 after they won the toss and elected to bat first.

In reply, the Knights struggled to get going with the bat thanks to a regular fall of wickets. Nonelela Yikha was the standout bowler for the Warriors, picking up impressive figures of 4/45 to help dismiss the Bloemfontein outfit for 175 with 5.4 overs to spare.

In the last match, Lifa Ntanzi and Coca-Cola South Africa under-19 batter, Thamsanqa Khumalo were the stars in the Dolphins’ convincing win. After losing the toss to the Titans, the Durban side restricted their opponents to 144 thanks to Ntanzi’s superb return of 3/10 in 6.2 overs with the ball.

It was then top order batsman Khumalo’s turn, whose sedate 44 off 117 deliveries along with a 65-run stand with Matthew Montgomery (38) propelled the Dolphins to victory.

Day Two of the tournament will resume on Friday and live scores can be located at www.websports.co.za.
